*****COMING TO THE POSSESSED BY PASSION BOX SET!**********
Q&A with author John Watson
In your own words, how would you describe your book?
The book is about a young woman who is obsessed with the idea of becoming internet famous. When presented with the opportunity to be a brand ambassador for a new horror subscription game, she is blinded to the fact that all may not be as it seems.
What are some hashtags you’d use to draw readers in?
This is why I am terrible on Instagram. Let me see, #dark, #creepy, #intense
What surprised you most when writing this book?
How much fun it was doing the research. That type of thing can be boring, but researching the codes and ciphers used in the game clues was really quite interesting.
Can you tease us with the first few lines of your book?
The sound of ringing phones echoed around the sprawling office space like a flock of birds singing the dawn chorus. The employees answering the calls wedged themselves into tiny cubicles that held little more than a desk and a chair. The only light in the office came from the overhead fluorescent lights, their bright glow casting an unnaturally brilliant sheen over an otherwise drab environment.
What inspired this story?
A couple of years ago, I purchased a horror subscription box for my daughter as a Christmas present. It was one of those ‘Hunt A Killer’ type deals where you had to solve clues in order to solve a mystery. I began to think about what it would be like if the game had real stakes. The story basically came from those initial thoughts.
Can you tell us what your favorite part of the book is?
The condo that the main characters live in is essentially the same layout as my home. There have been some rather spooky events that have taken place in our time here, which is not great when you have an imagination like mine. For a long time, I’ve had a rather unsettling image of someone coming up the stairs to our bedroom. I wrote that into the story, and I think it came out rather well. Using my kid’s names for the main characters was also fun. Just a little nod to how cool they both are.
And last but not least, what are some of your favorite dark or twisted movies?
I initially saw this story as subscription boxes meets Saw, so I would count the original Saw movie in here. They don’t get much more dark and twisted than Seven, though. I love that movie.
